Interesting points from both of you and all valid.  A lot depends on the industry and purpose.  Some companies in some industries will communicate and market their roadmap and use this to help sell forthcoming products.  The boundary is usually that it's used to sell something, directly or indirectly.  Other industries and other companies, considering the nature of their business, decide not to discuss their plans in the public domain for a multitude of reasons.  These is no right or wrong answer it's the choice of individual businesses.

From our pespective we choose not to publish our roadmap for software updates.  There are actually so many different variables that influence whether we do an update or not and when, we don't make the decision to deploy it until very close to its deployment.  If we did publish a roadmap it would be very short and not firm enough for us to want to give our customers.  We are also in a fully public domain here and would anyway more generally not publish our plans.

The dialogue we have here is still valuable and the ideas and suggestions are listened to.  We get ideas and may combine these with the other broader customer research we do.
